Home to a UNESCO masterpiece

Šibenik is famous for the Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely from stone—without any mortar. It’s considered one of the most important Renaissance monuments in Europe.

Unlike many coastal cities founded by Romans or Greeks, Šibenik was established by Croats. It was first mentioned in 1066 during the reign of King Petar Krešimir IV.

Šibenik has four impressive fortresses: St. Michael’s, Barone, St. John’s, and St. Nicholas. They offer stunning views and tell stories of battles against the Ottomans and Venetians.

Located at the entrance to the St. Anthony Channel, this UNESCO-protected fortress once defended the city from sea attacks and is one of the most unique maritime fortifications in the Mediterranean.

Šibenik was one of the first cities in the world to have public street lighting powered by alternating current, thanks to the nearby Krka hydroelectric plant in 1895—just days after Niagara Falls.

Only a short drive away, Krka National Park offers breathtaking waterfalls, especially Skradinski Buk, where visitors can walk along wooden paths surrounded by nature.

Šibenik served as the city of Braavos in the popular TV series Game of Thrones. You can walk the same streets as Arya Stark during her training.

The old town is full of narrow stone streets, stairways, and hidden squares. Look closely and you’ll discover carved faces on the cathedral—each one unique and believed to represent real people.

Šibenik is less crowded than Dubrovnik or Split, offering a more relaxed and authentic experience with local food, wine, and everyday life.

From crystal-clear beaches and nearby islands to cultural festivals, music events, and historical landmarks—Šibenik offers a complete Adriatic experience in one place.
